Wally Frank Underslung Smooth General Dawes Estate Briar Pipe, American Estates
Out of stock
Description
Though marketed as the “Underslung,” pipe history buffs are likely to recognize this particular shape by a few other names: the Captain Warren: the General Dawes; or the Lyon. Who was Warren? That is something pipe historians debate. Who was Dawes? Aside from being an American brigadier general, he was also president Calvin Coolidge’s Attorney General, as well as someone never without his pipes. Who was Lyon? The inventor of the Dawes—the pipe, not the man.
Though the terms are used interchangeably, and this one would, per Ben Rapaport, be an example of a Dawes. Historically, the designs were similar, both featuring a tall, removable, calabash-like chamber and a shank extending from the top of the bowl. But, per Rapaport, the Warren had a rounded base, while the Dawes’ was flat. It seems Dawes himself loved the latter, often being depicted with one in his teeth.
The condition is very good. A couple of worn out fills and some slight wear to the rim.
