Thayne (Jarl) 15 B Partially Sandblasted Egg Estate Briar Pipe, Danish Estates
Out of stock
Description
It is said that Thayne pipes were some sort of offshoot of Jarl pipes. Having compared shapes and finishes, I’m inclined to agree, especially as Jarl had a shape 15 exactly like this one. Jarl itself was a make run by Niels Mogens Jørgensen, a Danish pipe maker in the 20th century based in Kolding, Denmark, not far from the Bari factory. Jarl pipes are less well known than Bari or other contemporaries, so the confusion over Thayne is very much understandable. There is yet still more Danish pipe history to be fully uncovered, but that’s a matter for another time. For the moment, it bears noting that Jarl’s (and, by extension, Thayne’s) designs were as innovative and distinctly ‘Scandinavian’ or ‘Danish’ as others in that tradition, without losing their own style and originality.
This particular pipe is a shape I’ve seen plenty of Jarls made in before, and one I’m quite partial to. It’s a hybrid shape, as Danes are wont to do, blending elements of the egg, the pickaxe, and a little of the Danish acorn, all while being tremendously lightweight. With its tall bowl, it’s sure to be a great flake pipe, though I’d imagine it would handle just about any blend quite nicely.
The condition is good. Minor inner rim darkening, a couple of superficial scratches on the bowl, and slight residual stem oxidation.
