Stanwell Pre-2010 Colonial 191 Smooth Danish Bulldog Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked

Description
Stanwell is one of Denmark’s most celebrated and enduring pipe companies, having been founded by Poul Nielsen shortly after the second world war. Over the last six decades, Stanwell has established itself as both a leader in innovative Danish design and for producing well-priced pipes with precision construction and engineering. Many of its designs were created for the company by iconic pipe-makers in the Scandinavian scene, such as Sixten Ivarsson, Anne Julie, Jess Chonowitsch, and Tom Eltang.
Despite the general downturn in pipe sales beginning in the 1970s, the next few decades would see, to my mind, some of the best new Stanwell shapes in a long time. This was, of course, largely because Stanwell expanded its roster of Danish greats commissioned to create those shapes, each bringing their own, signature style to Stanwell’s portfolio. The 191 is one of my own favorites from this period, taking the form of a short, stout, and very Danish bulldog designed by Tom Eltang. What with the way Stanwell operates these days, I’m not sure if the 191 is still in production, though if it isn’t, it certainly wouldn’t be the first time the company discontinued a great shape. In either case, this one looks to have been made prior to 2010, as it was made in Denmark, at Stanwell’s famous Borup factory.
This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating, and comes with its original sleeve.
