Stanwell 84R Reg Era XL Sandblasted Canadian Estate Briar Pipe, Danish Estates

Stanwell is one of Denmark’s most celebrated and enduring pipe companies, having been founded by Poul Nielsen shortly after the second world war. Over the last six decades, Stanwell has established itself as both a leader in innovative Danish design and for producing well-priced pipes with precision construction and engineering. Many of its designs were created for the company by iconic pipe-makers in the Scandinavian scene, such as Sixten Ivarsson, Anne Julie, Jess Chonowitsch, and Tom Eltang.

As a Stanwell collector I do relish in the opportunity to discuss some of the make’s more uncommon shapes, and this is one such example. It is not one of their most “Danish” shapes (though Stanwell, following the lead of Sixten Ivarsson, has always had an affinity for oval shanks), but it is out of the ordinary. Assigned the code of the 84R, this extraordinarily long Canadian-esque design was not the first of Stanwell’s forays into lengthier-than-average shapes, but it was part of a group that, in the 1960s, Stanwell marketed as their “Giants.” As one might expect, the Giants were large pipes, though owing to the great variety of designs on offer, this gigantism could refer to all manner of proportions. For the 84R, it denoted length and bowl size. This one was also hand made, as indicated on its stamping, which I think was true of all Giants, as well as a few other shapes at the time. These were among Stanwell’s more expensive pipes, carrying the tagline that “A hand-made Stanwell Pipe is second to none.”

The condition is good. Some rim charring, slight finish fading, and a slightly over-buffed stem.
