Description
Taking their name from architect Richard Meier’s avant-garde homestead just off the Long Island Sound, Smith House Pipes are the creation of New York artisan Rich Rosselli. Like the Danish-American functionalists before him, Rosselli excels at creating modernized renditions of tried-and-true, traditional, Anglo-French staples. This he combines with novel uses of color and ornamentation, giving Smith House Pipes their acclaimed, signature aesthetic.
I’ve always thought of the Liverpool as a slightly under-appreciated shape. Not unlike its close cousin, the lumberman, the Liverpool is often overlooked relative to other long shank shapes—the Canadian and the Lovat specifically—yet seemingly without reason. This one is a lovely take on the classical Liverpool, featuring proportions close to those of, say, Comoy’s in the midcentury, as well as the slight forward cant of such traditional briars. The finishing is more modern and more in the Smith House style, however, with this one wearing a ring grain, deep contrast variation of Rosselli’s “Vintage” sandblast, complemented by a hand-cut tortoiseshell acrylic mouthpiece.
