Sean Reum Sandblasted “Shape 75” Zulu Handmade Briar Pipe, New

Description
Over the last decade, Sean Reum has emerged as one of North America’s most admired and in-demand pipe-makers, with his fans including, among many others, the one and only G.L. Pease. Having followed Reum’s career for many years, including catching a few glimpses of the artisan in his Montana workshop, I’m happy to say that his status in the pipe world is well-earned. A master carver of hand made pipes in the Scandinavian tradition, Reum has managed to secure a niche in the highly competitive artisan market through a combination of innovative designs and production techniques, a consistent, high quality output, and an almost unparalleled work ethic.
This week we’ve got two fittingly “spooky” Reum pipes in just in time for the Halloween season. The first, this one, sees Reum doing a playful, modernized take on one of the old Stanwell classics designed by Sixten Ivarsson: the shape 75 Zulu. This is certainly not the first time Reum has found inspiration in Ivarsson’s designs, including for the great Danish make. Like Ivarsson’s shape 75 Zulu (and indeed many of Ivarsson’s renditions under his own name), it’s very neoclassical in form, with a reserved, graceful and tasteful figure not unlike the Zulus of old. Where it differs, however, is in its oval shank and in its shorter, rounded bowl, which in many ways is closer to the pear shapes of early French briar pipes. Reum’s is dressed in a more gothic attire than any of the aforementioned briars, however, mixing a near-black sandblast with a smoky, black, white, and gray resin stem.
