Description

Over the last decade, Sean Reum has emerged as one of North America’s most admired and in-demand pipe-makers, with his fans including, among many others, the one and only G.L. Pease. Having followed Reum’s career for many years, including catching a few glimpses of the artisan in his Montana workshop, I’m happy to say that his status in the pipe world is well-earned. A master carver of hand made pipes in the Scandinavian tradition, Reum has managed to secure a niche in the highly competitive artisan market through a combination of innovative designs and production techniques, a consistent, high quality output, and an almost unparalleled work ethic.

Here’s something interesting from Sean Reum. A pipe that is a little more hefty than I’m used to seeing him make, but one that is not unwelcome either. It’s a decidedly stout, quarter-bent apple (perhaps even closer to an author) with a partial sandblast and a hand cut ebonite stem. It’s a little closer to Italy than Reum’s more frequent Danish-style pipes, but it’s still decidedly Reum’s own vision. I particularly like the color and texture combinations brought in by the ring grain, black blast of the bowl, the smooth, golden brown polish of the shank, and the limited edition green ebonite of the stem. It’s a pleasure for the eyes, a pleasure for the hand, and – though this goes without saying – it will be a pleasure to smoke too.
