Description
Over the last decade, Sean Reum has emerged as one of North America’s most admired and in-demand pipe-makers, with his fans including, among many others, the one and only G.L. Pease. Having followed Reum’s career for many years, including catching a few glimpses of the artisan in his Montana workshop, I’m happy to say that his status in the pipe world is well-earned. A master carver of hand made pipes in the Scandinavian tradition, Reum has managed to secure a niche in the highly competitive artisan market through a combination of innovative designs and production techniques, a consistent, high quality output, and an almost unparalleled
Much like fellow Americans Walt Cannoy and Nathan Armentrout, Sean Reum has his own, signature sandblasting technique (and, indeed, his own signature rustication). Named the “Eggshell,” Reum’s finish is a micro-sandblast of sorts, intended to produce a similar texture to one found on—of course—eggs. This brandy is a relatively reserved affair, with the micro-blast dressed in an obsidian top-coat, though it’s not without Reum’s hallmark splash of color. In this instance, the latter comes from a specialized, deep blue resin, intended to emulate the softer feel of ebonite, while being far more resilient against oxidation, in the same vein as acrylic.
This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating.
