Description
Over the last decade, Sean Reum has emerged as one of North America’s most admired and in-demand pipe-makers, with his fans including, among many others, the one and only G.L. Pease. Having followed Reum’s career for many years, including catching a few glimpses of the artisan in his Montana workshop, I’m happy to say that his status in the pipe world is well-earned. A master carver of hand made pipes in the Scandinavian tradition, Reum has managed to secure a niche in the highly competitive artisan market through a combination of innovative designs and production techniques, a consistent, high quality output, and an almost unparalleled work ethic.
So-called “windshield” pipes have been made for over a century, with one of Alfred Dunhill’s very first pipe patents being for just such a design. Dunhill’s idea was that, by having a raised front section of the rim, one’s pipe would be less affected by the breeze if one was puffing away while driving, or indeed when taking a brisk walk outside. In the years since, the windshield motif has been employed by all manner of companies and artisans, each with their own distinctive interpretation. This one, by Sean Reum, is highly novel, incorporating the windshield’s signature stepped bowl into a poker Dublin shape. Being a Reum, the pipe features excellent ring grain sandblasting, a burgundy contrast stain, along with a stem hand-cut from crimson ebonite. Perhaps the most interesting feature, however, is how Reum has used the natural plateaux burl of the briar used for the bowl, erupting out of the windshield’s raised fore.
