Savinelli Don Lisander 604 EX Smooth Oom Paul Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked

It is probably fair to say that Savinelli is Italy’s most famous pipe brand. Founded in Milan in 1876 by Achille Savinelli, the brand has continuously offered high quality pipes for nearly 150 years. Though various Savinelli lines have come and gone over the years, the brand has always been notable for putting out classically styled pipes with a distinctly Italian twist.

Savinelli’s Don Lisander is rather mysterious, having been a name attached to what appear to be multiple, distinct lines in the distant past and, technically, to a more recent one as well. I say “technically,” because Don Lisander was one of the names that a 19th century Italian poet and statesman went by, in addition to his birth name, Alessandro Manzoni.  Fans of Savinelli’s contemporary output will likely know of the limited edition Manzoni line, though the Don Lisander may be a rather experience for them. In this instance, it’s a name that looks to have been given to what is essentially an upmarket version of a Savinelli Dry System, with extraordinary, lightly finished bird’s-eye grain and a sterling silver collar, rather than the Dry System’s more typically nickel mount. This dashing Don is also rendered in Savinelli’s seldom-seen, extra large variation on its 604 Oom Paul, or Hungarian, which nowadays largely reserved for the Hercules line.

This one happens to be completely unsmoked. There is some tarnishing of the silver, but not irredeemably so. I’ll leave the decision of what to do with that for the next owner, so as to leave this rare specimen just as it was found.

On a last note, as this is a Dry System variant, it is drilled to allow for the use of 6mm filers, such as Savinelli’s own balsa filters, if preferred, but will perform perfectly well without one. It also features an upward-facing slot, rather than a standard fishtail mouthpiece.
