Description
It is probably fair to say that Savinelli is Italy’s most famous pipe brand. Founded in Milan in 1876 by Achille Savinelli, the brand has continuously offered high quality pipes for nearly 150 years. Though various Savinelli lines have come and gone over the years, the brand has always been notable for putting out classically styled pipes with a distinctly Italian twist.
Annual, limited edition pipes are far from a new phenomenon, but Savinelli does things a little differently to other makes. While the choice of finishes offered for Savinelli’s yearly Collection pipes have remained constant since the inauguration of the series in 1985, the shapes have each been completely different, and wholly new in Savinelli’s catalog. This means that the Collection shapes can’t be found anywhere else in Savinelli’s standard issue pipes, nor indeed in its other limited edition series, such as the Saint Nicholas. The variety of Collection shapes is also notable, with vastly different styles pursued each year. 2023’s Collection pipe, for example, was a fairly traditional Lovat; the 1999 shape, on the other hand, was an almost Danish looking acorn. 2002’s design, as seen here, was an eighth-bent billiard of sorts, incorporating elements of other shapes as well, including the poker and the tankard.
The condition is fair. Some wear to the rim, finish fading, and chamber slightly over-reamed. As with most Savinelli pipes, this one has a 6mm filter capacity (including Savinelli’s own balsa filters), but will perform just as well without one.
