Description
The House of Rattray was originally a tobacconist, opening in Perth, Scotland, in 1903, under the oversight of Charles Rattray. House of Rattray soon became a blending house (whose blends are still sold to this day under the Rattray’s name) and a purveyor of Rattray-brand pipes, made for the tobacconist by established English pipe makers. Over the years, the name changed hands, with contemporary Rattray’s pipes and tobaccos being produced under the umbrella of German’s Kopp company (formerly Kolhase & Kopp). Today, Rattray’s pipes are manufactured by various major European makers, such as Chacom and Butz-Choquin in France and Brebbia and L’anatra in Italy.
A few of Rattray’s Sanctuary pipes are not made from the briar root that most pipes today are. Instead, they utilize a material that has been used in pipe making for just as long as briar has, especially in Italy: olivewood. Like briar, olivewood is highly heat-resistant, neutral in flavor, and possesses quite beautiful grain patterns. Given that Rattray’s today contracts its pipe making out to a number of Italian brands, I wouldn’t be surprised if this came from that partnership. As for the design, it’s a nice, stout billiard, with a silver faux spigot engraved with the Rattray’s triskelion.
This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating. It is chambered to allow for the use of 9mm filters if desired.
