Randy Wiley 1999 Patina XL Smooth Freehand Estate Briar Pipe, American Estates
Out of stock
Description
Beginning his career as a pipe maker in the 1970s, Randy Wiley was a key figure in the new wave of American artisans in the late-20th century pipe scene—and still is today, five decades later. Though he does make some “traditional” pieces, he is, arguably America’s greatest living carver of “freehand” pipes, comparable to Denmark’s Preben Holm or Erik Nording in their prime. And, like Holm and Nording, Wiley has an array of signature finishes at his disposal, resulting in designs that occasionally border on the figural.
While many of Randy Wiley’s pipes are rusticated, whether partially or more or less completely, the Patina series is comprised of completely smooth finishes, with an emphasis on the natural beauty of the briar underneath. Looking at the grain on this stacked, somewhat maritime, freehand, one can see why it received such a rare honor. The mineral-like inlay at the base of the pipe’s stem is a nice touch, too, adding another layer of distinction to an already very beautiful work.
The condition is great. Some slight handling marks, but the pipe has clearly been well looked after.
