Description

Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin.

This Peterson is quite fascinating. If you know Peterson pipes fairly well, which I’d like to think I do, you will know of the Kapmeer series, which was, as the name suggests, lined with meerschaum. You should also know of the African and Turkish block meerschaum pipes that were, respectively, produced many decades ago and produced infrequently. So what is this? A Drymeer? I’ve not seen one of these before. As the pipe is stamped ‘Great Britain’ it will not have been produced in Ireland, so I wonder whether this, like the African meerschaum Petersons, was produced for Peterson by Laxey Pipes on the Isle of Man (an Island just off the shores of England). Perhaps it was a dry run for the African meers. Forgive the joke, but we all like to have a little fun sometimes. In either case, this could be your chance to own one of the only Peterson Drymeer pipes still surviving.

The condition is fantastic – even better for any collectors out there – with the vulcanite stem still jet black and free of tooth marks, the finish still shining, and the meer lining intact. There is a tiny bit of darkening on the top of the meerschaum bowl, but that is what meerschaum does, so it should be expected.
