Description
Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin.
Peterson has had a number of “sports” and general “outdoors” themed pipes over the years. Turning to the ever-resourceful Peterson Pipe Notes by Mark Irwin, it appears that the first such example debuted in 1947, though most today are likely to be more familiar with the Sportsman line from around a decade ago. This is not that. This is the much older Sport line and will have been manufactured at some point in the second half of the 20th century. As the name suggests, it’s a short, lightweight piece, perfect for puffing on while, for example, playing a round of golf (more so than tennis or football, I’d wager).
The condition is fair. It looks to have seen a few (possibly sports related) scrapes, with the odd, superficial nick in the bowl here and there, and there’s some slight rim darkening.
