Peterson Killarney 999 Smooth Rhodesian Estate Briar Pipe, Irish Estates

Out of stock

Description

Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin.

Since its debut in the late 1940s, the Peterson’s Killarney line has gone through a number of differing iterations, with the most recent still being sold by Peterson today. This is neither one of the earliest Killarneys, nor one from its contemporary production. Instead, it is from somewhere in between, though I’ll admit that I’m not sure exactly when. For the example, the pipe retains much of the nomenclature of early renditions, including the designation of “A Peterson Product,” but features the modern “P” stem logo, nickel accents, and indeed the lacquered finishing of what we now know as the Killarney Red. The shape, on the other hand, would be easily identifiable even if its number were not stamped on the bowl: the classic Peterson “999” Rhodesian.

The condition is very good. Minor inner rim charring and very slight residual stem oxidation.
