Description

Papa Bear’s Pipes are made by North American artisan Tim Beaumont. Beaumont has been making pipes since 2018, cultivating a unique style that isn’t afraid to mix and match design elements and to create something completely out of the ordinary.

As mentioned in another of tonight’s listings, Tim Beaumont has been working his way through the classics of post-war Danish pipe making recently, creating a variety of distinctive renditions of what have become artisan staples. While certainly leaning into the leaning into the Danish tradition, this bent egg from Beaumont might strike, at first, as being a little more modest than his other recent works. Yet a closer inspection reveals an uncanny, yet so often underappreciated, precedent, in the work of Age Bogelund. As with Bogelund’s work, both at Bari Piber and as a solo artisan, Beaumont’s egg is highly organic and employs an eye-catching, orange-brown contrast stain to add layers to its grain patterns. But it also uses a combination of ebonite and amber-toned acrylic accents, along with a pronounced, asymmetrical flare in its ebonite stem, to create a repeating, two-tone sequence from bowl to button, with a slight variation at each step. Though Bogelund’s and Beaumont’s choice of materials and styles in this sequencing are distinct, the parallels in approach are very much there—and, from the perspective of a lover of minor Danish greats, are very much welcome.
