Description
Like so many classic names in English pipe making, Loewe & Co. was founded by a Frenchman, Emil Loewe, in 1856, in London’s Haymarket street. Though not as well-known as contemporaries such as Comoy’s or GBD, Loewe—sometimes referred to as L&Co.—pipes have long held a place in the hearts of pipe collectors, especially collectors of the great Anglo-French makes.
This is only the second Loewe & Co. pipe we’ve had come through in years and, looking at it, I’m even more inclined to think that’s a consequence of their owners refusing to part with them. This one is a very beautiful English pot, with plenty of bird’s-eye around its bowl and a sterling silver spigot mount. The shaping strikes a perfect balance between a good sized chamber and a lightweight, clenchable stature, coming in at just 36 grams.
The silver hallmarks on this one indicate that it was made in 1979, which places its manufacture before the Cadogan Investments merger in the early 1980s (which brought many Anglo-French makes, including Comoy’s, GBD, and BBB under one roof) and before Loewe & Co.’s similar fate a few years later.
The condition is good. Some darkening and general wear to the rim, and a few superficial scratches on the bowl exterior.
