Larrysson pipes were the creation of Paul Hubartt, one of the greats of pipe making in the 21st century. Born in Iceland, raised in the American mid-west, and ultimately settling down in Cornwall, England, Hubartt’s pipes were as complex and eclectic as one would expect from such a biography. Though Hubartt’s pipe making moniker, Larrysson, was chosen to reflect his Icelandic heritage, it would be reductive to say that his pipes were therefore simply “Scandinavian” (patronyms being a prominent practice in the region). That’s not to say that Hubartt couldn’t make pipes in the Danish style—quite the opposite. But it was also patently clear that he could make pipes in any style, whether traditional or modern, and was even highly skilled in crafting novel, figural designs based on subjects as varied as dripping wax, tree stumps, and anchors. Hubartt retired from pipe making in 2021 due to a hand injury, but has since found a new outlet in other art forms, proving that creativity is not so easily stifled.

Were it not for its tremendous size, this Larrysson might be considered rather staid within his portfolio, but it is nonetheless most certainly a Larrysson. One of the things that made Larrysson special was his insistence on only using the best briar available, which he personally selected during visits to Italy’s Mimmo Romeo. Good briar means very little without the skills to put it to good use, however, though thankfully Hubartt had those too. The sandblasting on this extra large poker is truly remarkable, with some of the tightest, most consistent ring grain I’ve ever encountered. It is also a sitter which, considering it is over seven inches in length, is a genuine feat of technical precision.

This pipe is completely unsmoked and comes with its original sleeve.
