Description
After being a pipe smoker for over forty years, Illinois native ultimately Kevin Arthur decided to make his own briars. That was back in 2007, with Arthur soon attracting a good deal of attention when presenting his work at various pipe shows. After being picked up by major retailers and enjoying a good amount of acclaim in the artisan scene, Arthur appears to have dropped off the map, though one still encounters high-quality estates like this one every once in a while.
The design of this one is often called a sphinx. One can think of it as an offshoot of the classic Danish cobra, but with the bowl’s sides furled inward at their edges, much like the ancient Egyptian creature and its hallmark mane. This one is a little more colorful than the founding Danish renditions, as was Arthur’s style, with an Ivorite ferrule and an amber-toned Lucite mouthpiece.
The condition is very good. Some inner rim darkening and minor finish fading.
