Description

Kaywoodie pipes are as American as apple pie. Starting in 1919 as a pipe brand for KB&B, a pipe shop dating all the way back to 1851, Kaywoodie has since then been a staple of American-made pipes. In the present, many Kaywoodies are collectors’ items, in addition to being fantastic smokers.

While by no means impossible to reasonably date, Kaywoodie pipes are nonetheless challenging when it comes to how precise that date is. Kaywoodie pipes were, aside from recent-production pipes of the year, not stamped with a year of manufacture like Dunhill, for instance, so dating them requires using other cues. There are pre-1936 Kaywoodies, for example, and there are pre-1972 ones, but in both of these instances we’re still left with a period of many years to contend with. This Kaywoodie is a little different, in that it can be reliably dated to either 1929, 1930, or 1931. This is because it’s a very early example of a Kaywoodie with a Synchro-Stem (the threaded fitment by which the pipes’s stem and famous four-hole stinger was attached), whose patent was applied for in 1929 and granted in 1931. As the pipe is stamped with a notice of the prospective patent, dating it with reaosnable precision makes it all the more simpler.

The pipe itself is a great example of one of Kaywoodie’s extra long Canadian designs. While it is around 7 inches in length and has a very generous chamber capacity, it still manages to remain just over an ounce in weight.

This Kaywoodie is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating. Some light scratches on the bowl, but nothing major.
