Description
Kadir Baysal was one of Turkey’s master meerschaum carvers in the 20th century, having taken up the craft all the way back in 1962. His works ranged from the highly ornate, to the more mundane, though he seemed to have an affinity for human faces, especially as caught in bouts of intense emotion. This one, for example, looks to be a bust of a weeping child, which is a slightly macabre theme, but such are the whims of artists, fine and practical. The detail on the boy’s hair is especially impressive, and indeed reminds me of the mane I once had, many years ago.
The condition is very good. Some darkening and slight wear to the inner rim.
