Julius Vesz 1992 Hand Made (4) Rusticated Stack Estate Briar Pipe, Canadian Estates
Out of stock
Description
Hungarian-Canadian artisan Julius Vesz carved his first pipe all the way back in 1959, and continues making pipes today in the 2020s. With 60 years of experience in the craft, he is recognized as one of the most seasoned and skilled pipe-makers around, counting among his admirers luminaries such as Richard Carleton Hacker, who remarked upon the “rare elegance” inherent to Vesz’s work.
Julius Vesz’s Hand Made line leans toward the “traditional” side of pipe design, in contrast to the Hand Cut, where one typically finds more modern, slightly experimental pieces. Both are made from Vesz’s enviable hoard of aged briar, which he has been collecting for decades, but the Hand Made embody shapes that were closer to the norm of when that briar was first growing, or, at least, when it was first harvested. This Hand Made grade 4 (of 4) is one of Vesz’s stack renditions, a shape that, despite its towering figure, is nonetheless distinguished by the “rare elegance” Hacker once spoke of, especially with its modest, micro-rusticated dressed and sleek, Zulu-like profile.
The condition is good. Some wear to the rim and slightly faded (though legible) nomenclature.
