Jody Davis 2021 Friar C Sandblasted Lumberman w/ Ivorite Estate Briar Pipe, American Estates

Description

Jody Davis is a rockstar—literally. As a member of the Nashville rock group The Newsboys, he doesn’t have much time to make pipes these days, meaning his output is very limited. He’s also a rockstar in the pipe world, which makes the few pipes that he does put out each year extremely coveted. With mentors such as Lars Ivarsson and Jess Chonowitsch, it’s not hard to see why Davis became such an icon in his own right. In turn Davis has also left his mark on the artisan scene by, in turn, passing on his knowledge of the craft to other now-celebrated contemporary figures, such as Jeff Gracik of J. Alan pipes, and Pete Prevost.

There are few carvers in America quite as renowned for their sandblast finishes as Jody Davis. Like J.T. Cooke and Lee Von Erck, Davis’s Friar-grade pipes undergo a special sandblasting process developed by the artisan himself, one that involves many passes through the blasting cabinet for each and every stummel. In this instance, the process has been applied to one of Davis’s signature long shank shapes, an especially large and muscular lumberman, yielding a ring grain relief so tight and dense that it’s taken on an almost “webbed” appearance. As Davis is also wont to do, the design includes an inlay of ivorite in its hand-cut cumberland mouthpiece, adding a dash of contrast against the pipe’s play of deep red tones.

The condition is very good. Some rim darkening and finish fading on the rim, and chamber slightly over-reamed.
