Jack H Weinberger Smooth Freehand Pickaxe Estate Briar Pipe, American Estates
Out of stock
Description
Jack H. Weinberger was one of the founding fathers of American freehand pipes and a seminal figure in American artisan pipe making writ large. Starting out as an apprentice of sorts to Max Schulte, of Schulte’s, Weinberger started his own workshop in the 1960s, with a focus on pipes that were an American answer to the booming “Danish Fancy” genre. Soon enough he had plenty of apprentices and students of his own, including Mark Tinsky and Curt Rollar, who went on to found the American Smoking Pipe Company. Weinberger passed away in 1982, though his legacy is still very much felt today in the American handmades scene.
This particular pipe is a classic Weinberger-style design, being one of the numerous, slightly freeform pickaxes to come out of his workshop. There’s certainly a Danish tinge to it, with notable comparisons being the pipes of Kriswill, though Weinberger’s is a little more assertive and “American.” It’s beautifully grained too, which is also to be expected from Weinberger’s work.
The condition is very good. Some darkening and slight scratches on the rim.
