Description
Born and raised in the small town of Gueydan, Louisana, Jason Mouton’s rise in the ranks of American pipe makers has been nothing less than meteoric—and for good reason. Having crafted duck calls since he was a teenager, Mouton’s first forays into pipe making began with carving tampers. Mouton’s unexpected and substantial successes with these handmade tampers encouraged and allowed him to purchase the equipment needed to create pipes themselves. Studying the works of renowned American artisans such as J. Alan, Grant Batson, and Jared Coles, Mouton gradually developed his own pipe making craft, which was furthered by his exchanges with Greek artisan Chris Asteriou. Today, Mouton’s works are some of the most sought after on the artisan market, a demand which he has responded to—and not unlike his beginnings in carving tampers—by reinvesting his successes into an unwavering advancement of his skills and technique.
It’s one thing to have an idea; it’s another altogether to pull it off. Since the emergence of the contemporary American artisan scene in the 2000s, pipe makers have experimented with “sitter” shapes in all manner of ways, from the minimalist standing Dublins of Brad Pohlmann or Premal Chheda, to the awe-inspiring neo-cavaliers of Todd Johnson or Jody Davis. But the old adage about inspiration and perspiration still holds true. One can only imagine the humidity in Jason Mouton’s workshop when he was putting this together. Despite being over 6 inches tall, this ripe acorn shape is positively balletic in its capacity to retain an upright posture. A shank extension carved from lightweight bamboo root will certainly have helped, but even then, it’s a delicate balance, and a genuine achievement on Mouton’s part. Even better, the pipe doesn’t sacrifice on aesthetics in this pursuit, pairing the plumpness of the bowl with a strikingly bulbous saddle at the base of the mouthpiece, and adopting a similar pairing in the pipe’s black and gold color palette.
