Description
If you’ve been keeping up with the world of Chinese pipe making, their artisan scene has been really taking off over the last decade. Like the great Danish institutions of old, many of these pipes are produced in artisan workshops such as Zhiputang, Qi Studio, and GH Zhang. Hong Kong’s HS Studio follows a similar model, with a team of expert in-house carvers crafting high-quality briars in a variety of styles.
So-called “wide shank” shapes are by no means new in pipe making, though they are the domain of seemingly endless innovation. One finds wide shank—and, indeed, wide more generally speaking—shapes in the portfolios of Sixten Ivarsson, Bo Nordh, Ed Burak, and Tom Eltang, though in the case of this one from HS Studio, I’d wager the greatest influence was Poul Ilsted. The use combination of facets, flattened planes, and the pipe’s boxwood stem inlay is very “Ilstedian,” though the overall design isn’t one-to-one with particular Ilsted pipe I’ve come across. Rather, it looks more like a tasteful homage, with a few personal additions here and there, such as the “crown” of plateaux at its rim.
This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating. It comes with its original sleeve.
