HS Studio Sandblasted Egg w/Boxwood Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked

If you’ve been keeping up with the world of Chinese pipe making, their artisan scene has been really taking off over the last decade. Like the great Danish institutions of old, many of these pipes are produced in artisan workshops such as Zhiputang, Qi Studio, and GH Zhang. Hong Kong’s HS Studio follows a similar model, with a team of expert in-house carvers crafting high-quality briars in a variety of styles.

There’s certainly a very Danish aesthetic to this egg (it could perhaps also be considered a scoop) from HS Studio, evoking the pipes of figures such as Former or Anne Julie during her early years. On the other hand, it maintains a health distinction from the styles of either, including through the use of a nice boxwood mount.

This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating. I note a couple of natural imperfections in the boxwood mount, so I’ve adjusted the price to reflect that. I wouldn’t worry about them, however, as boxwood is even denser than briar, making this a purely cosmetic matter.
