If you’ve been keeping up with the world of Chinese pipe making, their artisan scene has been really taking off over the last decade. Like the great Danish institutions of old, many of these pipes are produced in artisan workshops such as Zhiputang, Qi Studio, and GH Zhang. Hong Kong’s HS Studio follows a similar model, with a team of expert in-house carvers crafting high-quality briars in a variety of styles.
Through figures such as Scottie Piersel, Federico Becker, Max Rimensi of Il Duca, and Gregory Polla of Merchant Service, so-called pencil shank pipes have had a genuine revival in recent years, with numerous variations on that slender, typically longer than average genre of briars. This one from HS Studio combines the shank in question with a similarly tall, narrow bowl, which should make it perfect for flake cuts. The finishing is relatively reserved, though no less craggy for it.
This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating. It comes with its original sleeve.
