Holtorp Smooth Freehand Estate Briar Pipe, Danish Estates
Out of stock
Description
While relatively obscure today, Per Holtorp was in fact one of the earliest significant figures in Danish pipe making, being among the first to sell “Danish style” pipes out of the legendary Pibe-Dan (later renamed Pipe Dan) workshop. By the early 1960s at least, he was selling pipes next to other post-war pioneers such as Sven Knudsen, Gert Holbek, Ib Loran, Poul Hansen, and a young Preben Holm.
Here we have an example of a “Danish fancy” freehand by Holtorp, with a very naturalistic shaping that appears to be showcasing as much of the briar block as possible—not unlike the Italian “fan” freehands later associated with the Savinelli Autograph workshop, among others.
The condition is very good. Some finish fading and minor handling marks.
