Description

Like the Eskimo shape, morta, or bog oak, has taken on a special place in Europe’s eastern regions, where many of its most prominent adherents reside. But morta has a far deeper connection to this part of the world, as it is where the material is most commonly harvested. It is, one might say, the meerschaum of Eastern Europe.

It is also a very difficult medium to work with, owing significantly to its denseness and hardness, which is the result of it essentially being fossilized wood that has lain in peat bogs for millennia. Czechia’s Pavel Holub is no stranger to morta, using it for many of his pipes. In this instance, he’s used it to produce a striking rendition of the traditional Lovat. The morta itself has been sandblasted, bringing the wood’s complex grain patterns into greater relief. The near-black natural hue of the bowl has then been paired with a lime green Lucite stem. Despite morta’s density, it is also surprisingly lightweight, meaning many pipe smokers will find this one to be an easy clencher.
