Description
Pavel Holub’s Eclesias make is part of what might be called the “new Czech scene” in artisan pipe making. Like his compatriots Jirí Maczko (Biftek) and Martin Cermak, Holub is one of a number of pipe makers from the Czech Republic who have carved a distinct niche in today’s competitive, worldwide community of solo carvers trying to make a name for themselves—and, indeed, to show that high-grade pipes are not exclusive to Scandinavia, the United States, or Japan. And Holub has become very successful at it, having attained the status of a cult favorite for his eclectic, distinctive approaches to traditional, Scandinavian, and post-Scandinavian pipe design.
This pipe from Holub is a little more traditionally inclined than many of his works, though it still has plenty of “Eclesias” character to it by way of its distinctive color scheme. A lightweight, well-balanced prince, the design is one of a classic, tan finish, with a ring grain sandblast around its bowl and a smooth polished, beveled rim, along with a stem hand-cut from swirling, midnight blue acrylic.
