Description
Eclesias Pipes are made by Pavel Eclesias Holub, a Czech artisan and a genuine cult sensation in contemporary handmade pipes. Like his friend and former teacher, Jiřík ‘Biftek’ Maczko, Holub is one of the most prominent and recognizable figures in the Czech artisan community today, one that has become increasingly central in the broader European scene. Part of this no doubt comes down to his distinctive approach to the aesthetics of pipes, incorporating shapes and finishes that are, at times, singularly “Czech” and, at others, entirely of his own making.
The “Eskimo,” for example, also known as the “Inuit,” the “surfing bulldog,” or the “wide shank bulldog,” is especially popular in Czech pipe making, being a favorite of Martik Cermak, Biftek, and, of course, Pavel Holub. Though it has its roots in Danish and American pipe making, by way of the designs of Sixten Ivarsson (a precursor), Tom Eltang, and Ed Burak, it has more recently been adopted as a staple by artisans further east, each of which adds their own spin. Holub’s renditions, for example, are typically far more colorful than their counterparts elsewhere in the world. Such is certainly the case for this one, which pairs the natural, virgin finish of its bowl with a psychedelic mouthpiece hand-cut from SEM ebonite.
