Dunhill 1979 Bruyere 62022 Smooth Oom Paul Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked

To veteran pipe smokers, Dunhill needs no introduction. Beginning in 1907, Alfred Dunhill began selling Dunhill pipes at the tobacconist shop he owned on London’s Duke Street. Very quickly, these pipes gained the reputation of being the ‘Rolls-Royce’ of pipes due to how expertly crafted they were. Today, Dunhill is likely Britain’s most famous pipe manufacturer, and continues to produce some of the most treasured pipes a smoker can buy.

Aside from its OD series and a very small number of other, limited edition pieces, Dunhill’s group 6 pipes, such as this one, are the largest that the company produces. Similarly to the OD series, group 6 Dunhills are also far from regular within the company’s output, making them a rare find. This group 6 Bruyere from 1979, on the other hand, is even more rare, on account of it being from a rather curious turning point in the history of Dunhill pipes. While today’s Dunhills are manufactured according to shape charts standardized via a four-digit system, for a short time between the mid-1970s mid-1980s, Dunhill used a five-digit system, with the last digit indicating certain design variations in design that were omitted once the the four-digit system came into effect. The 62022, as seen here, featured a far steeper bend than its contemporary counterpart, the 6202, bringing it closer to a classical Oom Paul shape. This one also comes from back when the Bruyere featured more of a ruby-red finish, rather than the more subdued, plummish hues of its current iteration.

This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original (though slightly flaked) bowl coating. There are a few minor handling marks, but nothing major at all. It comes with its original box and sleeve.
