Dunhill 1967 Root Briar EP Smooth Canadian Estate Briar Pipe, English Estates

Description

To veteran pipe smokers, Dunhill needs no introduction. Beginning in 1907, Alfred Dunhill began selling Dunhill pipes at the tobacconist shop he owned on London’s Duke Street. Very quickly, these pipes gained the reputation of being the ‘Rolls-Royce’ of pipes due to how expertly crafted they were. Today, Dunhill is likely Britain’s most famous pipe manufacturer, and continues to produce some of the most treasured pipes a smoker can buy.

From the pipes I’ve handled over the years, it seems to me that the “EP” is quite a rare shape among Dunhills. I’d hazard a guess that it was produced from the mid-1960s until the mid-1970s, after which it was retired with the advent of Dunhill’s modern, standardized shape code system (first as 5-digit codes, then as the 4-digit ones we know today). It was very similar to the Quaint shape “EC” Canadian, with the difference being that the EP was around a half inch (about 20mm) longer. This one’s a beauty of a rendition, with more than enough bird’s-eye around its bowl to earn its Root Briar finish. Despite the added length, it’s not much heavier than an EC, either, making it an ideal clencher.

The condition is fair. Some charring and general wear to the rim.
