Castello “Castello” 4K Smooth Army Dublin Estate Briar Pipe, Italian Estates

Founded in 1947 by Carlo Scotti, Castello quickly became known for producing some of the finest smoking pipes in the world. Over the years, the people involved in making Castello pipes has changed – such as Luigi Radice and Sergio Ascorti, who developed their skills in the Cantu workshop before leaving to start Caminetto, or the handing of the reigns of the company to Francisco ‘Kino’ Coppo after Scotti’s passing – but the superlative quality of Castello pipes has not. It is not without reason that Castello is known as ‘the Italian Dunhill.’

I can see why this particular Castello, dressed in the workshop’s signature blonde “Castello” finish, attained its full four out of four “K”s. The bowl features some superb straight grain, which flares outward in a great synergy with the Dublin form it’s been rendered in. It’s a wonderfully light piece, too, with a Lucite army mount and stem making for an easy clenching, great looking pipe.

The condition is good. Some wear to the inner rim, chamber slightly over-reamed, and a few minor handling marks.
