Brad Pohlmann Sandblasted John Bull Bulldog Estate Briar Pipe, American Estates

Out of stock

Description

One of America’s most esteemed artisans, Brad Pohlmann’s career in pipe making began in the mid-1970s, studying and working alongside Elliott Nachwalter, Jorg Jemelka, and J.T. Cooke at the legendary Briar Workshop. After 5 years at the workshop. Pohlmann departed for California, where he undertook further studies in machining, with the intention of continuing to work as a professional pipe maker. Due to circumstances beyond his control, Pohlmann spent the next decade and a half working in the computer industry, making and repairing pipes purely as a hobbyist but, ultimately, he was able to return to pipe making proper, which he has continued to do as a full-time vocation ever since. Today, Pohlmann belongs to the upper echelons of American pipe making, and indeed pipe making globally. His work is never without demand and his pipes command prices that 99% of artisans could only dream of.

This particular Pohlmann is one of his personal favorite shapes and signature in his design portfolio. Dubbed the “John Bull,” it is a large, broad, low-slung squat bulldog rendition that could be described as one part Danish (in the vein of S. Bang or Tom Eltang), one part English (in the vein of Dunhill and its O, OD 838 and OD 839 shapes), and one part pure American muscle. As one should expect from Pohlmann, this one is dressed in perfect, crisp, ring grain sandblast despite the complexity of its form.

The condition is fair. Some rim charring and minor finish fading, and a professional, sterling silver repair band due to a small crack in the shank.
