Description

Bari was a pipe company founded in Kolding, Denmark, in 1950. Along with Stanwell, Bari was one of the first companies that started the Danish movement in pipe-making, offering innovative designs and propelling its founders and carvers into celebrity status within the pipe world. Bari’s founder was Viggo Nielsen, whose sons Kai Nielsen and Jørgen Nielsen joined him in working at Bari, along with other soon-to-be famous names such as Åge Bogelund. Though the Bari company is long gone, its legacy lives on in the artisan pipe scene as it exists today.

Given that, for much of its existence, Bari Piber was having to compete with the likes of Erik Nording, Preben Holm, Bjarne Nielsen, and countless other Danish pipe makers, it’s all the more impressive that Bari’s “freehand” pipes—which included the bulk of its Wiking, or Viking, models—remain easily recognizable as belonging to the make. While Viggo Nielsen and his successor Helmer Thomsen were undoubtedly master pipe makers, it’s fair to assume that a large part of the credit for making Bari’s freehands so unique is owed to Age Bogelund. Based on Bogelund’s solo work, whose shaping and stem designs are highly reminiscent of pipes such as this one, it is hard not to look at many of Bari’s freehands and see Bogelund in them. On a last note, this by far the largest Bari pipe I’ve ever come across. It is big.

The condition is excellent. We debated whether or not this pipe might be unsmoked, but as we could not reach an agreement, I’m listing it as used, just in case.
