Bari Wiking 7095 Part Sandblasted Freehand Estate Briar Pipe, Danish Estates

Out of stock

Description

Bari was a pipe company founded in Kolding, Denmark, in 1950. Along with Stanwell, Bari was one of the first companies that started the Danish movement in pipe-making, offering innovative designs and propelling its founders and carvers into celebrity status within the pipe world. Bari’s founder was Viggo Nielsen, whose sons Kai Nielsen and Jørgen Nielsen joined him in working at Bari, along with other soon-to-be famous names such as Åge Bogelund. Though the Bari company is long gone, its legacy lives on in the artisan pipe scene as it exists today.

Mixed finishes are something of a lost art (if we don’t count smooth rim/sandblast bowl combinations), allowing for one to make the best use of the grain as it presents itself. Parts best suited for a consistent, vertical expression become smooth, flame grain or straight grain; parts best suited for horizontal expression become sandblasted ring grain. This Bari follows that logic wholeheartedly, while at the same time creating a kind of “Jekyll and Hyde” effect that I’ve not seen on a freehand before.

The condition is good. Some slight charring on the inner rim and minor finish fading.
