Description

Bari was a pipe company founded in Kolding, Denmark, in 1950. Along with Stanwell, Bari was one of the first companies that started the Danish movement in pipe-making, offering innovative designs and propelling its founders and carvers into celebrity status within the pipe world. Bari’s founder was Viggo Nielsen, whose sons Kai Nielsen and Jørgen Nielsen joined him in working at Bari, along with other soon-to-be famous names such as Åge Bogelund. Though the Bari company is long gone, its legacy lives on in the artisan pipe scene as it exists today.

There are muscular pipes, and then there’s this. It’s possibly the most robust billiard I’ve seen from Bari, a sturdiness that is made all the more imposing by its rugged, hand-carved proportions. This is not a pipe that was forged on a lathe, but one that was carefully rendered on a sanding belt, which allowed its carver to work the briar’s natural straight grain and flame grain patterns into the bowl. The finish is an interesting smooth matte, aside from a small portion on the bowl’s underside, where a spot carving in the shape of a teardrop has been playfully hidden. As it happens, the spot carving lends an extra bit of grip to the design.

This Bari also happens to be completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating from the Bari workshop to help ease in its first smokes.
