Ardor 2020 Spirale Rusticated Billiard Estate Briar Pipe, Italian Estates

Like many Italian workshop brands, Ardor pipes are a family affair. The name itself is an acronym of Angelo Rovera and Dorelio Rovera, father and son pipe-makers who created the brand in 1972. The Rovera family’s history with pipes goes back much further, however, as Angelo’s own father, Francesco, had previously established the Sociedade Rovera pipe company with his brothers in 1911. All Ardor pipes are completely hand-made from briar that has been seasoned for at least 4-5 years, and the brand is noteworthy for its playful and innovative approaches to design. As a result, Ardor pipes are both quintessentially Italian, while also being somewhat different, having a style that is wholly their own.

Unlike the majority of Ardor’s pipe series, which have astronomical namesakes, the Spirale is characterized by its deep, spiraling grooves, hewn by hand in the Roveras’ workshop. It is by no means a common series in the Ardor portfolio but, when it does appear, it is certainly welcome. In this instance, the design is modest and light, with the Spirale rustication applied to a simple, sturdy billiard and draped in a minimalistic, tan finish. This pairs well with the pipe’s mouthpiece, cut from Lucite which matches the bowl both in its hues and swirl.

The condition is excellent. We’re not sure if it has been smoked, but we’re going to go with “smoked once or twice at most.”
