Sven Lar

Sven Lar was the name of an American pipe workshop headed by Michael Kabik. Kabik began making pipes during the early 1970s at Chuck Holiday’s CHP-X before being invited to lead a new workshop in Virginia under the Sven Lar name.

Trained as a sculptor, Kabik brought a distinctly three-dimensional approach to pipe making. Sven Lar tobacco pipes reflect the influence of postwar Danish freehands while maintaining an unmistakably American character. Danish pipe maker Anne Julie also spent time with Kabik and shared techniques that contributed to his development.

Sven Lar pipes often feature substantial bowls, flowing profiles, plateau briar, spot carving, and sculptural sitter designs. MBSD’s examples are estate pipes, with unsmoked pieces and pipes from the higher Skulptur series appearing only occasionally.
