Description

Over the last decade, Sean Reum has emerged as one of North America’s most admired and in-demand pipe-makers, with his fans including, among many others, the one and only G.L. Pease. Having followed Reum’s career for many years, including catching a few glimpses of the artisan in his Montana workshop, I’m happy to say that his status in the pipe world is well-earned. A master carver of hand made pipes in the Scandinavian tradition, Reum has managed to secure a niche in the highly competitive artisan market through a combination of innovative designs and production techniques, a consistent, high quality output, and an almost unparalleled work ethic.

Just like smooth pipes with light, natural finishes, rusticated and sandblasted ones are always at the mercy of the briar itself, with even minor, cosmetic imperfection precluding a near-naked stain. This is why, for example, the Dunhill Tanshell is far more expensive than the Shell Briar, and why the Savinelli Punto Oro Corallo is so rare. But when the briar is just right, you can end up with a pipe that not only has its growth rings laid bare in a wonderfully craggy relief, but will also slowly acquire a patina over time, not unlike meerschaum. What begins as a light, barley brown, becomes warm and golden. This compact Dublin from Sean Reum is sure to follow that progression, which makes the pairing of the bowl with a stem cut from one of Reum’s own amber-gold resins even better.
