HS Studio Smooth Dublin Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked
Out of stock
Description
If you’ve been keeping up with the world of Chinese pipe making, their artisan scene has been really taking off over the last decade. Like the great Danish institutions of old, many of these pipes are produced in artisan workshops such as Zhiputang, Qi Studio, and GH Zhang. Hong Kong’s HS Studio follows a similar model, with a team of expert in-house carvers crafting high-quality briars in a variety of styles.
As with another HS Studio we listed recently, this one certainly leans into the Danish tradition, but not quite in the way most would expect. Instead of opting for a rendition of a blowfish, volcano, Ramses, fancy freehands, etc., it looks to have taken inspiration from designs that were conceived much earlier on in Scandinavian pipe making history. Specifically, it looks to be leaning into the neoclassical designs found in the early post-war Pibe-Dan (later Pipe Dan) and W.O. Larsen pipes. Rather than Former or Jess Chonowitsch, the pipe reminds of Sven Knudsen, Poul Ramsussen, or indeed Sixten Ivarsson in the 1950s, more than anyone else. It’s extremely lightweight, graceful, doesn’t stray too far from traditional, Anglo-French design, and it’s a more than welcome sight.
This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating. It comes with its original sleeve.
