Description
As is often the case with the greats of Danish pipe-making, the story of Poul Winsløw begins as one of a master and an apprentice. That master was none other than Preben Holm; the apprentice was a young Winsløw. Holm held Winsløw in especial regard, with the latter ending up as the former’s head assistant in the Preben Holm workshop. After Holm’s untimely passing, Winsløw went solo, and after surviving the slump in the Danish pipes market in the 1980s and early 1990s, he emerged as one of Denmark’s – and the world’s – premier freehand pipe makers.
While Poul Winsløw puts out excellent freehands under his Crown series, his finest, high-grade pipes are each graded—with just a few notable exceptions—alphabetically. These pipes show off even better grain than the Crown series and are also accorded certain fineries that are not found on any Crown grade. This particular E grade is a very Danish, very “Poul Winslow” pipe. Taking the form of a large, disc blowfish, the bowl is brimming with flame grain that flickers around its ridges and planes. The bowl then transitions into a rusticated shank in a near-black finish, before one last dash of color is introduced by way of an amber-toned acrylic ferrule.
This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating. It is chambered to allow for 9mm filters should the user prefer, or can fit an adapter (not included) for non-filtered use.
