Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin.

Aside from making generally excellent pipes, one thing Peterson is renowned for is its use of precious metals in its designs, all of which are turned and fitted by its in-house silversmiths. Peterson’s sterling silver spigot mounted lines, for example, represent some of the finest and most emblematic pipes made at its Dublin premises. Among these lines, however, there are distinctions made between finishes, briar quality, and a few other extras that set even the various Silver Spigot pipes apart. The Natural Spigot is Peterson’s most distinguished line as far as spigot mounts go, with only the most high-grade, flawless briar used in their creation. But there is a sister line of sorts that goes one further, that being the Silver Cap Natural Spigot. As the name suggests, these pipes don’t just feature silverware on their shanks and stems, but also on their rims, which are painstakingly applied from sheet sterling silver by Peterson’s silversmiths. These pipes are rare and exceptionally difficult to get hold of, with long waiting lists, even for just one pipe.
