Description
To veteran pipe smokers, Dunhill needs no introduction. Beginning in 1907, Alfred Dunhill began selling Dunhill pipes at the tobacconist shop he owned on London’s Duke Street. Very quickly, these pipes gained the reputation of being the ‘Rolls-Royce’ of pipes due to how expertly crafted they were. Today, Dunhill is likely Britain’s most famous pipe manufacturer, and continues to produce some of the most treasured pipes a smoker can buy.
The Black Briar is something of an oddity within Dunhill’s catalog, for two reasons. One is that, at least at first, it had an extremely short lifespan within the history of Dunhill’s standard-production finishes, only being manufactured between 1973 and some time around the late 1970s to early 1980s. How, then, is this one from 1991? That’s the second odd thing about the Black Briar: despite being removed from continuous production, it has resurfaced every now and then, such as for special occasions or, seemingly, simply at Dunhill’s whim. This one from 1991 is a classic Dunhill bent billiard, with the Black Briar’s signature espresso finish accented by two silver collars.
The condition is good. Some inner charring and finish fading on the rim and minor handling marks.
