HS Studio Smooth Calabash w/Boxwood Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked

If you’ve been keeping up with the world of Chinese pipe making, their artisan scene has been really taking off over the last decade. Like the great Danish institutions of old, many of these pipes are produced in artisan workshops such as Zhiputang, Qi Studio, and GH Zhang. Hong Kong’s HS Studio follows a similar model, with a team of expert in-house carvers crafting high-quality briars in a variety of styles.

The calabash has seen a fascinating revival in the 21st century, and from artisan pipe-makers no less. From Tom Eltang, to J. Alan, to Mimmo Provenzano, pipe-makers are putting their own spin on a shape older than the briar pipe itself. This calabash from HS Studio workshop follows in that vein, with a briar bowl, a removable briar chamber, and even a boxwood cap that emulates the meerschaum one of the original calabash designs. Unlike the original calabash, and more like the modern artisan renditions, this one also has a hand cut ebonite stem.

This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating.
