Description
Founded in 1947 by Carlo Scotti, Castello quickly became known for producing some of the finest smoking pipes in the world. Over the years, the people involved in making Castello pipes has changed – such as Luigi Radice and Sergio Ascorti, who developed their skills in the Cantu workshop before leaving to start Caminetto, or the handing of the reigns of the company to Francisco ‘Kino’ Coppo after Scotti’s passing – but the superlative quality of Castello pipes has not. It is not without reason that Castello is known as ‘the Italian Dunhill.’
Like many Italian workshops of its generation, Castello uses the “G” designation for the first rung of its oversize pipes. So, while this Zulu Dublin (which I think might be a shape 19 variant) is still a nicely manageable 6 1/4 inches or so, it nonetheless possesses a tall, deep bowl with a sizeable chamber. The pipe is dressed in Castello’s signature “Castello” finish, a very Italian, light, blonde stain that pairs beautifully with the pipe’s black Lucite stem.
The condition on the whole is very good. Just a slight inner rim darkening. There is what looks to be a small scrape or blemish on the bowl’s lower left side, so the price adjusted slightly to reflect that.
