Description
Sydney P. Ram, also known as Sidney P. Ram, was an American pipe maker and tobacconist in the early to mid-20th century. Originally based in Chicago, before moving to Chicago after his formal retirement, Ram’s pipes promised the finest Corsican and Algerian briar, virgin finishes free from heavy stains or dyes, and a lack of any “superfluous” stingers or special fitments (likely a sly jab at his competitors on both sides of the Atlantic). In other words, Sydney P. Ram pipes were no nonsense, no frills smoking instruments, while also being expertly constructed from high-grade materials.
Brazen marketing aside, looking at this magnum bent billiard, it is difficult to disagree with Ram’s self-assessment. Following the mold of the classic, pre-war swan neck billiards of England and France (famously immortalized by the Dunhill LC rendition), the pipe showcases exquisite, ring grain sandblasting and the lightest of finishes, with one result being a lovely, warm patina that will have developed over the decades.
The condition is very good, especially for a pipe that was, presumably, made in the 1930s or early 1940s. Some rim darkening.
